THE LIGHTFOOT STORY
Mother
“I waited
in the check‑out line
with my two sons.
As we neared the checker,
both exclaimed ‘Mom,
there’s a Metcalf!
Mom, there’s a Metcalf!’
The checker’s nametag read
Ann Metcalf.
She couldn’t figure
why the boys
were excited about her name,
so I had to tell her
the Lightfoot Story.”
Father
“Once,
in Merry Olde England,
a king
sent two runners
to carry a message.
On the way
they met a calf.
One runner
was afraid of the calf,
and turned back.
The other delivered the message.
The king named the one
afraid of the calf
Metcalf;
he named the other
Lightfoot.”
Grandmother
“Pop and I
were traveling
out west
once
and stopped for gas.
The attendant asked
‘Are you Indian?’
Pop said, ‘Yes,
we’re out after scalps.’
The attendant
said ‘Better drive on.'”
