The Silo — Home of the Monster Dog

While on a visit to the Niagara Falls area recently, I happened to dine at The Silo on Water Street in Lewiston, NY. The restaurant gets its name from its site — a converted coal silo on the waterfront in Lewiston that used to hold coal for passing trains and passing ships. To look at it today, you would hardly be able to recognize the silo, from the way the decks around it have been built to house the dining tables.

The fare was good, regular burger fare.  Decent food, nice ambiance (though a little windy the day we were there — had to hold down our paperware to prevent it blowing off). But what I want to specially mention is the “Monster Dog” — a hot dog larger than seven regular hot dogs. Nathan didn’t order his usual chicken nuggets  because he wanted to try the “Monster Dog” (If you dare, the menu said), so I asked if he wanted me to split it with him. And it certainly was something worth splitting.

As you can see from the picture, the Monster Dog is longer than the bun they can find for it. The presentation is nice, but not really elegant. The taste, satisfying, but it really is just a regular hot dog writ large.  But that made it fun, and satisfying.

Which goes to prove that novelty doesn’t have to be exotic.
