There were a lot of excellent pieces sung at the North Kansas City High School Fall Choir Concert, but for me the combined choir of the Eastgate and Northgate 8th graders with the NKCHS A Capella Choir was the highpoint of the evening.
As parents of an A Capella Choir student, we arrived and got to hear the combined choir rehearsals, as well as the actual performance. I am not sure what it is about this song, but I teared every time I heard it sung.
The arrangement is a wonderful setting of new words and familiar tunes that calls a very patriotic sense from the emotions.
The one musical weak point was the two times that the choir was at a crescendo section and director Mike Shirley called for the group to keep crescendoing, and they just stayed flat at their current forte instead of growing even stronger.
But it was still a very compelling and resounding piece. So here it is:
