Moving from Upstate New York to Western Missouri has dislocated me in my seasons, after 25 years it still hasn’t settled.
Growing up, Labor Day meant frost any moment. each day was an extra growing day until frost. But here in Kansas City, we usually have two or three more months where things might grow.
Yes, might.
Because despite all the nice temperatures, and all those potential growing days, my garden is just kind of deciding to shut down. Even if watered. Must have something to do with the changing length of day.
Now, the fall crops I started, who are at the beginning of their growth cycle, seem to be fine, but the ones already past their adolescent stage are thinking more of old age than first fruits again.
So is this Summer, Autumn? Both seem present, but which one more and to last how long? the gardener’s guess is just that, a guess.
