Passive Progressive

Is what is wrong with our thinking in America.

No, I don’t mean that we should all insure with Progressive. It is the idea that saved money is free money. Rather than money that needs to be returned to where it came from.

Government saves so much money that it then spends 3 times over again. And we all start thinking the same way.

Spending to save isn’t spending. Spending less than you expected to pay isn’t saving. Both are spending. Both decrease the amount of money you have for other things. They may leave you with more money than if you had taken a more expensive option, but the money saved doesn’t give you more than you had before. It doesn’t make $100 turn into $110 or $105. It makes the $100 become $55 instead of $50, or $60 instead of $50.

So allocating the savings to something else, and turning your $100 budget into $110 by the time you are done means that your $10 savings turns into a $10 deficit instead.

In this case it is the Passive Progressive who saves more, by not saving, and then spending what is saved twice over. Don’t learn lessons from either of them: The Passive Progressive, or the Active Progressive.

(There is a political “progressive” joke in there somewhere … I just know it!)
