Rise up, Shepherd, and Follow

There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
It will lead to the place where the Savior’s born,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Leave your sheep and leave your lambs

Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Leave you ewes and leave your rams

Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Follow, follow, rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

If you take good heed to the angel’s words,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
You’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Leave your sheep and leave your lambs

Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Leave you ewes and leave your rams

Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

Follow, follow, rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

This Christmas song is interesting, it combines the shepherds, who came because they were told by the angels, with the Star, which is what brought the Magi. But I like the haunting, calling quality of it.  It isn’t very true to the facts, combining facts in the wrong places, but somehow seems to be very true to the spirit of the season, to the calling, the coming, responding.

My Caroling group doesn’t do this song. Someday I’d like to see them do it.
