The Avondale United Methodist Church Book Club Has published the below list of books that we will be reading and discussing over the coming year (listed alphabetically by title):

The books haven’t been assigned to specific months yet, because of something that Betsy and I are really looking forward to. The last book, alphabetically in the list, is by Sarah Hoyt, and she has agreed to attend the book club via Skype to discuss the book with us and give us the author’s viewpoint on her work.
Betsy and I have become followers of Hoyt’s work over the past couple of years, and it was our (primarily Betsy’s) interactions with her at her online blog that gave us the courage to 1) put her book up for the book club, and 2) ask Hoyt if she would be willing to talk to our book club about it.
So while we want to encourage anyone in the area that feels led to join the book club for discussion of any of these books, we are especially encouraging people to read and join us for the discussion of Witchfinder( see link to Amazon and Barnes & Noble here) by Sarah Hoyt. Once the date is set I will make sure that everyone knows and is encouraged to read and discuss it with us.

Another book on the list — Murder with Peacocks — was also one that I recommended. So, we’re guaranteed to like at least two books on the list this year. ;-D

Two of the books that made my church’s new book club list (Bring on the Blessings and Toxic Charity) were ones that I had suggested (rather than recommended which would’ve meant I’d already read them) so I hope they’re good books. However, my Mom has read the first of those in one of her book clubs and the Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church recommended the other one so I feel like they’re pretty safe choices. I’m also looking forward to having an author join us for the discussion of her book whenver we discuss Witchfinder.

We don’t read just “Christian” books at the book club — it is a very eclectic list: history, fiction, biography, social issues, etc. There is one book in the list specifically addressed to church issues: Toxic Charity, about how good intentions can have unintended bad consequences.
I think we look for books that broaden our understanding of the entire world, and see how they affect our view of the world.
