I know, this is me being catty, or ratty, or something less than the positive, uplifting person I try to be, but when the truth comes to your mind, sometimes it doesn’t always seem so positive, until you live enough of your life to get the context needed (assuming you live that long).
The changeable message board outside the Avondale United Methodist Church says:
“If you are feeling down
God will lift you up”
The unspoken subtext should be:
“Because we won’t.”
I am certainly glad that God is more dependable than that church has proven itself to be to me.
Which is an unfair statement to make of most of its members. I know many of them as truly listening and compassionate people. But it is what happens when a hierarchical leadership is more concerned for its own image and position and privilege than serving the people in need.
