Creational and relational type Renaissance man (writer, singer, thinker) holding to C.S Lewis's credo that if you follow truth originality takes care of itself, (anyway, originality is so yesterday, anyway.) That I have my wonderful wife Jasini is proof enough for me that life isn't fair. If it was fair I wouldn't have her, and instead she is my most faithful example that I am blessed beyond measure. My two adult children are the same unmerited blessing to me. We should all be thankful life is not fair but blessed.

The State of Bicycle Shops

I'm really no qualified to make comments, my experience being very eclectic, but I will anyway. There could be other shops out there that I am not aware of, but from the perspective of what I know, it seems like the market is getting scarcer for suppliers to cyclists -- which is odd, considering that … Continue reading The State of Bicycle Shops →

A Blast of the Past #50: Winter 2002

Today's post is a vignette of the fun of a winter past. It includes scenes outside in the snow, and inside snuggling and playing. There are even a couple of shots of longtime friend Lester Morris, whom like many friends from days gone by, we haven't seen in awhile.

Races leading to the weekend

This week's wrap includes an event that is occurring this evening, and actually started last night. The Kansas City Corporate Challenge bicycle race began last night, and finishes up today. I'm slated to race tonight sometime after 5:30 p.m. I almost didn't race, with my bicycle breaking down on Tuesday -- and that after I … Continue reading Races leading to the weekend →

#95: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks

(Part of a series singing through the hymnbook I grew up with: Great Hymns of the Faith) The interesting thing to note about this hymn, is that it is printed as almost one big quote, listing what the angel said to the Shepherds. 1 While shepherds watch'd their flocks by night, All seated on the … Continue reading #95: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks →

Even with All the Wisdom of Solomon …

I was reading the book of 2 Chronicles recently, and stumbled upon a lesson from the life of Solomon that I don't think is often captured. Let me set the stage with a few important passages: 2 Chronicles 1:6-14 And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the Lord, which was at the … Continue reading Even with All the Wisdom of Solomon … →

Fitness Update: tempo continues

(Note: Another week of writing progress as the week goes on.) Monday: Wife opened at work, so I got up when she left, ran a 5K, biked to YMCA, swam 1,000 yards, and biked to work. At end of work day I completed week 8 (final week) of the triathlon training challenge at the work … Continue reading Fitness Update: tempo continues →

#94: What Child is This?

(Part of a series singing through the hymnbook I grew up with: Great Hymns of the Faith) The Hymnbook I grew up with is a more modern version of this hymn. The Refrain is the same on all three verses. In the caroling book version I have, each chorus has a different refrain, the second … Continue reading #94: What Child is This? →

The Era of Bad Feelings

American History has an era during the presidency of James Monroe that has been called "The Era of Good Feelings". I wonder if today we might rightly be in a period that should be known as "The Era of Bad Feelings". We have candidates for the presidency that have polled higher negative ratings than their … Continue reading The Era of Bad Feelings →

A Blast of the Past #49: Baking Lessons

Today's blast has pictures from November 2001, including my daughter helping to make a pumpkin pie. Which is a rather interesting reflection back, since pie is not something she really eats anymore. But we had a lot of fun learning to bake, and make the related messes that go with practice. The old saw is … Continue reading A Blast of the Past #49: Baking Lessons →

Weekend Preview: Oceans of Fun Opens

Memorial Day weekend: the official beginning of the summer season, though not the beginning of summer itself. The weather forecast around here is thunderstorms all the way through, from now until Tuesday. So whether Oceans of Fun actually opens at 11 a.m. Friday or the closing is delayed by thunderstorms, is yet to be seen. … Continue reading Weekend Preview: Oceans of Fun Opens →
