(Part of a series singing through the hymnbook I grew up with: Great Hymns of the Faith)
Here we start the advent section of the book. I know it is out of the church calendar, but I always enjoy bringing these up for reflection and enjoyment during other times of the year.
1
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
REFRAIN
Rejoice! rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee,
O Israel.
2
O come, O cmoe, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai’s heigh,
In ancient times didst give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
REFRAIN
3
O come, Thou Rod of Jessse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyrrany;
From depths of hell Thy people save
And give them vict’ry o’er the grave.
REFRAIN
4
O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
O drive away the shades of night
And pierce the clouds and bring us light.
REFRAIN
5
O come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heav’nly home
Where all Thy saints with Thee shall dwell —
O come, O come, Emmanuel!
