(Part of a series singing through the hymnbook I grew up with: Great Hymns of the Faith)
This song is perhaps the most popular, or at least well known, Christmas hymn/song. At least, when I was singing with my caroling group at the local casino a few seasons ago, and we were under instructions from the casino to stick to the secular songs unless asked by the patrons, the most requested song by the casino goes was Silent Night.
1
Silent night! holy night!
All is calm, all is bright;
Round yon virgin mother and Child,
Holy Infant, so tender and mild —
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heaenly peace.
2
Silent night! holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav’nly hosts sing alleluia —
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
3
Silent night! holy night!
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace —
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth,
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
